Sportklinik Hellersen among "Germany's Excellent Hospitals 2023/24

Stern magazine recommends specialist clinic in the fields of cruciate ligament rupture/meniscus and spinal surgery

Among 2,400 hospitals in Germany and 42 specialties, the news magazine Stern determined the best clinics. The Sportklinik Hellersen is also one of them and is honored in the Stern list "Germany's excellent hospitals 2023/24" for the areas of cruciate ligament tear/meniscus and spinal surgery.

"In order to remain fit as long as possible in old age, the early preservation of joints is particularly important and thus the reconstruction of injured components of the knee joint. We pay into our health account at a young age, so to speak," explains Dr. Volker Stoll, chief physician for knee surgery and sports traumatology at the Sportklinik Hellersen. Due to the high degree of specialization at the Sportklinik Hellersen, three departments are the contact for injuries around the knee and thus also for cruciate ligament ruptures and meniscus injuries. 1,030 menisci alone are operated on each year at the Sportklinik Hellersen out of around 2,000 knee operations.

Another specialty of the Sportklinik Hellersen is the spine. In 2020, the interdisciplinary spine center was expanded to include the area of special spine surgery with head physician Dr. Oliver Meier. Since then, in addition to the conservative treatment of back pain and microscopic minimally invasive disc surgery and spinal canal expansion, highly complex interventions for deformities and instabilities are also possible, such as for scoliosis. In close cooperation, the entire spectrum around the spine is mapped.

"We are pleased about the renewed award for spine surgery as well as the first-time recommendation for the area of cruciate ligament rupture and meniscus. It shows that the path of specialization, which we have been following and continuously optimizing for more than 75 years, is the right one. Only in this way can we offer our patients the highest quality and top-level medicine," says Dirk Burghaus, Chairman of the Board of the Sportklinik Hellersen.

In an elaborate research, Stern and the research institute Munich Inquire Media (MINQ) determined the best clinics and specialist departments in Germany. A team of doctors, journalists and database specialists conducted interviews with physicians, analyzed ratings from the "White List" of health insurance companies and quality reports from the clinics. A high weighting was also given to the reputation of specialist departments, for example through certificates from medical societies. The results were published in the June 29 issue of Stern magazine and at www.stern.de/kliniken. A total of 2,457 specialist departments from 723 hospitals received awards - including the Sportklinik Hellersen for the areas of spinal surgery and cruciate ligament rupture/meniscus.
